Nigeria’s leather industry can generate 700,000 jobs, science and technology minister Ogbonnaya Onu told the National Leather and Leather Products Policy Validation Workshop in Sokoto recently. He termed the leather industry, which generates 24.5 billion naira annually, as the next gold mine that holds the key to industrial growth, jobs and wealth creation.

The minister, whose message to the workshop was delivered by Okechukwu Okwumma, director general, National Centre for Technology Management, said the leather industry is strategic to Nigeria’s economic diversification, according to Nigerian media reports.

He said that the ministry would promote value addition in the industry using indigenous and innovative technologies.
