The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) to revive the state-owned textile mills through public-private partnership (PPP). Reopening the closed mills will help cater to the rising demand for local yarn and fabrics in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry, the BGMEA said.

The discussion was held recently when chairman of BTMC Brigadier General Md Zakir Hossain paid a courtesy call on BGMEA president Faruque Hassan to discuss different issues related to the apparel and textile industry.

Hassan said the demand for local fabrics and yarn is rising in the RMG industry of Bangladesh. Moreover, the RMG sector is increasingly focusing on garment items made from non-cotton fibre, which can be supplied by local textile mills, the BGMEA said in a press note.

Besides, rejuvenating the failing mills will create opportunity for more employment in the country, Hassan opined.
