The Tiruppur Exporters' Association (TEA) recently requested the government to allow reopening of sampling units in the cluster to fulfill the requirements of buyers and small stores in the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU). Failure in sending samples will drive away buyers to competing countries like China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, it said.

Orders for the Spring/Summer season can only be placed if samples are sent on time, TEA president Raja M Shanmugham said in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Garment units in China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Cambodia and Pakistan have already started functioning, he said.

Permission should also be granted for opening preparatory processing units like knitting, dyeing, compacting and calendaring, which can be operated in a phased manner after ensuring social distancing and providing personal protective equipment, he suggested.
