The Tiruppur Exporters’ Association (TEA) recently submitted a list of issues stunting the growth of the knitwear garment sector to Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. The issues include lack of adequate houses and dormitories for migrant workers, raising overtime cap for workers and permission to avail of the Amended Technology Upgradation Fund (ATUF) scheme capital subsidy in addition to state government’s capital subsidy.

A Knitwear Board should be established with its headquarters in Tiruppur and for knitwear product diversification, man-made fibres should either be supplied at international prices or be allowed to be imported without any duties, the association suggested.
A cargo terminal is also required at the Coimbatore airport apart from better road connectivity from Tiruppur to ports, improved facilities at ports in the state and an Employee’s State Insurance (ESI) hospital at Tiruppur, it added.
