UK's BRC satisfied with PM's Florence speech on Brexit

Satisfied with the British Prime Minister Theresa May’s recent speech in Florence in which she recognised the need for Brexit to work for consumers, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said it is time to adapt new customs regulations to avoid disruption and a final deal that avoids new tariffs at a time when household budgets are squeezed.

May is right to offer a guarantee to both European Union (EU) workers in the United Kingdom and British nationals in the EU countries between 2019 and 2021, subject to a registration requirement, BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson said in a press release.

"Our EU colleagues in stores and supply chains are part of the reason that British retailers are often able to deliver affordable and high-quality goods,” she said.

However, as they still need details about the registration process and securing their status, the British Government should negotiate with the EU Commission so that preferential reciprocal labour market access across industries like retail can be put in place for the post-implementation period, she said.

A period of implementation is vital to offer certainty for businesses and allow them to prepare, according to her. (DS)
