Maintaining its growth momentum, Iran exported hand-woven carpets worth US$ 279 million during the initial seven months of the current Iranian calendar year that started on March 21. If the trend continues, Iran is likely to meet the target of exporting more than US$ 600 billion worth of handmade carpets by the end of the year.

The Iran's National Carpet Centre had earlier predicted that the country's hand-woven carpet exports would grow by 12 percent this year compared to 2010-11.

During the last Iranian calendar year, the country exported handmade carpets worth US$ 556 million, registering a year-on-year rise of 12 percent. In terms of weight, there was a four percent rise in exports over the previous year.

Iran is the leading exporter of carpets across the globe, and it mainly shipped its handmade Persian carpets to Germany and the United Arab Emirates. Canada, Brazil, Japan, Lebanon, Sweden and Italy were the other major destinations of carpets from Iran.
