Germany was the largest importer of handwoven carpets from Iran during the last Iranian calendar year that ended on March 19, 2012.

Iran's handmade carpet exports rose to US$ 560 million during the year, showing a marginal 0.8 percent year-on-year rise over exports worth US$ 556 million achieved during the previous calendar year, according to data from Iran's Customs Administration.

The exports, however, fell short of achieving the target of US$ 600 million set for the year.

In 2011-12, Iran exported US$ 107.9 million worth of handmade carpets to Germany, which was followed by exports of US$ 102 million to the UAE.

Italy imported US$ 29.9 million worth of Iranian carpets and ranked third among the 80 countries that imported handwoven carpets from Iran during the year.

Qatar imported US$ 24 million worth of carpets and the figure is likely to increase this year as Iranian carpets can reach the US and EU markets via Qatar.

Some other countries that imported carpets from Iran during the year were UK, Brazil, Pakistan, Japan, China, South Africa, Australia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, France and Malaysia.
