The exports of handwoven carpets from Turkey to Japan rose by a significant 38 percent year-on-year, during the first six months of the current year.

The Istanbul Textile and Garment Exporters Union data showed that Turkey’s handwoven carpet exports to Japan grossed US$ 13.9 million during the first half of 2013, showing a rise of 38 percent year-on-year.

Exports to Japan accounted for 22 percent of all handwoven carpet exports made by Turkey during the six-month period, making the country the largest destination for Turkish handwoven carpets, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Last year, Japan’s share was 15 percent of all handwoven carpet exports made by Turkey.

Istanbul Carpet Exporters Union (IHIB) Chairman Ibrahim Yilmaz said there was an 18 percent contraction in demand from Japan last year, and the huge rise during this year points to revival of the demand.
