Around 4,000 jobs will be protected following the settlement between Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and Nigerian Association of Carpet Manufacturers (NACAM) for not to use fire retardant treatment as a standard for all rug production.

In the meeting NACAM and SON noticed that application of fire retardant in all carpet manufacturing would be eliminated.

NACAM President Mohit Manglam thanked Director General of SON for clarifying co-existence of fire retardant and non-fire retardant carpets without compromising their respective standard.

This decision is backed by Jaykay Carpets, International Carpets, Jackson Devos, NASCO Carpets and Atlantic Carpets, on the other hand, M/S Lucky Fibres feel that all carpets sold in the country should be fire retardant.

Technical Committee for Car Products stated that there is not specific differentiation between standards for fire retardant and non-fire retardant carpets.

NACAM emphasized that flammability tests on all carpets should be mandatory.
