World's largest carpet to grace Sheikh Zayed Mosque

World's largest hand-woven carpet, covering an area of about 5,625 square metres and larger than a football pitch, was unveiled this Tuesday at the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nuhayyan Mosque in Abu Dhabi.
Around 1,200 skilled artisans from villages in north eastern Iran worked laboriously for some 18 months to make the carpet which has 2.2 billion knots in green and cream colours.
About 38 tons of wool and cotton have been used to create this huge carpet, which was made up of nine pieces stitched together to cover the floor of the central praying area of the mosque.
The carpet, worth US $5.8 billion, has made news not only for its size but also for its trapezoid shape containing one concave and one convex side.
Ambassadors and diplomats of Islamic countries present in Iran have visited the weaving process of the world's largest carpet.
Public Relations Department of Iran's Carpet Company announced that the visit had positive outcome as many of the ambassadors showing eagerness to order carpets.
Iran's Carpet Company has decided to organize public tours to further familiarize people and journalists with this great art.
