Persian carpet to lose its key market

With the US ban on imports from Iran, including Persian carpets, the Iranian carpet industry is expected to lose its key source of revenue. The country garners around $500 million per year through the export of hand woven carpets, out of which 20 percent is earned from the US market.

This industry is completely operated by the private sector, right from raw materials stage to finished carpets, due to which this sanction is expected to take a toll on Iranian families producing hand woven carpets.

Ban on the import of Iranian products, including Persian rugs, was made effective from September 29. Iran manufactures around five million sq. m. of hand woven carpets, four million of which are exported per year.
