"Domestic oil and gas production is a cornerstone of our energy security. At present, we source approximately one fifth of our natural gas requirements from Poland's indigenous resources – some 3.5 bcm per annum. As demand for natural gas grows in the years ahead, we plan to increase production progressively, targeting 4 bcm by 2030. The hydrocarbons we extract underpin the wider economy: our gas supplies power generation and district heating, our crude oil is consumed as feedstock by domestic petrochemical and refining facilities, whilst our sulphur is a key input for fertiliser and tyre manufacturing," says Wieslaw Prugar, Member of the ORLEN Management Board, Upstream.
The Rózansko development is expected to contribute up to 130 mcm of natural gas annually to domestic production. ORLEN will operate the field for an estimated twenty years, a period during which the Polish economy’s demand for natural gas is forecast to peak. Gas from Rózansko will primarily supply combined heat and power plants in Kostrzyn nad Odra and Gorzów Wielkopolski. Crude oil and liquid sulphur – produced in part through a new gas desulphurisation unit – will be delivered to Polish industrial customers.
The field development project comprised the upgrade of three existing production wells together with associated infrastructure expansion, as well as the construction of a new pipeline linking the field to the Debno Oil and Gas Extraction Facility, one of Poland’s largest production complexes. The Debno facility has been expanded to include an 8 MW cogeneration unit fuelled by gas from neighbouring fields, enabling full self-sufficiency in electricity and process heat, with surplus power exported to the grid. The expansion has also facilitated increased production from the nearby Cychry field.
Strengthening domestic production is central to ORLEN's Strategy 2035, which targets gas output in Poland of 4 bcm per annum by 2030. In parallel, the ORLEN Group continues to develop projects on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and is pursuing further international investments with the aim of reaching 12 bcm of gas from equity production by the end of the decade.
