The Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is set to launch a skills development programme involving 2,000 people, which were selected primarily from areas around Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN). BEZA is expected to go on to train and employ around 22,000 people from seven economic zones in the country under the Private Investment and Digital Entrepreneurship (PRID) project.

Along with BSMSN, BEZA will offer employment opportunities to the trained workforce in Abdul Monem, Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (Japanese EZ), Bay, Kishoreganj, Private Economic Zone Meghna, and Sirajganj, according to several Bangladeshi media reports.

“Later, under the skills voucher programme, 20,000 people will be trained and employed according to the skilled manpower needs of investors in various economic zones,” said BEZA executive chairman Shaikh Yusuf Harun at the first workshop on ‘Skill Development for Sustainable Business Management in Economic Zones’ at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka. Harun added that the training programme for 2,000 people will be started soon, prioritising the affected people around BSMSN.

For developing skilled manpower, BEZA aims to mainly concentrate on various industries including garments and garment-related industries, integrated textiles, and leather and leather products. Various government organisations such as the National Skills Development Authority (NSDA) and Bangladesh Technical Education Board will be part of the initiative, added Harun.

The PRID project, which is estimated to be worth about Tk 127 crore, began in 2021 and will continue until 2025. The scheme has also been provided a loan of Tk 4,347 crore by the World Bank.
