India’s Manipur state can produce high-quality apparel at cheaper rates due to its proximity to Guangzhou, capital of China’s Guangdong province that supplies fabrics to firms in Manipur and Mumbai, according to state chief minister (CM) N Biren Singh. He said this while visiting the Apparel and Garment Making Centre in Imphal’s Lamboikhongnangkhong recently.

The building and machinery of Unit-1 of the government-owned centre is currently utilised by private company Big Concepts Foundation Pvt. Ltd for apparel production.

While the fabrics take around 40 days to reach Mumbai via sea, these take only 12 days to reach Imphal by road through Moreh border, media reports from Manipur quoted him as saying.

The private company-run unit has currently employed around 50. This figure may rise to around 300 once the other units at the centre start functioning, the chief minister said. (DS)
