Bangladeshi firm Liberty Fashion Wears Ltd in Zirani, which closed more than five years ago after its factory was declared vulnerable by British retail giant Tesco, is planning to resume production. Its managing director Mozammel Huq has urged European retailer platform Accord to withdraw the restriction on his factory and ask its signatories to come back.
The closure came after a visiting Tesco engineer in June 2013 said without any inspection and testing that the factory building was unsafe, said Huq. The next blow came when Accord skipped it for inspection. Fourteen buyers left the company after Accord declared the factory unsafe, a Bangladeshi newspaper report quoted Huq as saying. Huq said he did not remediate the factory as per the recommendations of the Accord engineers.
The company produced apparel mainly for retailers like Tesco, Primark, Target and Kmart, used to export garments worth Tk 350 crore annually and employ 5,000 workers. (DS)
