The latest eSpending report from Goldman Sachs, Nielsen NetRatings and Harris Interactive revealed that clothing was the number one category sold through the Internet during the US holiday season that enjoyed a big jump in online sales.
The eSpending report, which is based on a weekly survey of more than 1,000 adult consumers, demonstrates that online clothing sales reached $5.3 billion (€4.5 billion) during the period from 29 October to 23 December 2005, an increase of 42 percent over the same period last year.”
Senior retail analyst at Nielsen NetRatings, Heather Dougherty said, “Apparel remains one of the more dominant product categories during the holiday season, mirrowing offline holiday retail behaviour."
Computer hardware remained on second spot in spending with a total of $4.82 billion closely followed by consumer electronics, which generated sales of $4.79 billion. Toys and video games sales dropped 9 percent to $2.29 billion. For the holiday season total online sales rose 30 percent to $30.1 billion.
The report also noticed that online sales meanwhile account for 27 percent of total holiday sales compared with 16 percent in 2002.
Industry experts said, “Online purchasing was increasingly popular because of its convenience, product selection and lower prices as well as the timely delivery of last-minute purchases.”
