Ebrahim Rasool, representing the Western Cape Premier, has signed a 'buy local agreement' to ensure that all locally produced clothes get promoted and purchased by domestic consumers.

This happened at at the inaugural ceremony of Cape Town Fashion festival at the Rex Trueform factory in Salt River where plans to revive the flagging industry were announced.

Currently, the textile industry suffers due to cheap imports from East that has caused severe job losses over the past two years, according to Ebrahaim Patel, General Secretary of Clothing and Textile Workers Union (Sactwu).

He said Sactwu came up with a 10-point plan and he expects that it will offer fresh lease to the sick clothing industry.

The plan also intends to enhance quality of local products and refocus on pushing up exports.

Perfect blend of design, innovation and manufacturing can only help increase local textile and clothing output, views Patel.
