Readymade garment (RMG) in Bangladesh is likely to meet with fresh issues of labour as importers repeatedly want Bangladeshi manufacturers to comply with certain international labour standards.
Importers have also hinted that they would discontinue dealings with RMG producers from Bangladesh on the basis of non-compliance with labour standards.
Importers, RMG producers and Government of Bangladesh discussed the issue at length last year.
Though some development was achieved, importers demand full adherence to the labour standards to avoid attracting penalty from their respective countries.
To solve this issue, RMG sector needs to pay minimum decent wages to the workers, limit their work hours to a reasonable period, provide safe working conditions and other benefits.
Over 70 percent of the RMG industry of the country employs women, sources informed.
