International outfits customized for sale abroad

Malaysia's textile and garment sector remains an 'evergreen' industry and will last as long as there is a need for clothing.

Its textile and garment exports reached RM10 billion growing by 5 percent every year and especially trading with the US attaining 35 percent growth.

Penang has 70-80, small and medium sized textile and garment firms with a total workforce of 26,000, of which 20 to 30 percent are foreigners.

Fashion labels, like Abercrombie & Fitch, Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, Marks & Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger and L.L. Bean are all manufactured in a number of factories located both on the island and in Seberang Prai on the mainland.

Garments shipped to the world include jeans, T-shirts, men's shirts, knitted wear, skirts, blouses, tracksuits and jackets.

Apart from these items, clothing labels and buttons are also made for overseas market.
