Malaysia's textile and garment sector remains an 'evergreen' industry and will last as long as there is a need for clothing.
Its textile and garment exports reached RM10 billion growing by 5 percent every year and especially trading with the US attaining 35 percent growth.
Penang has 70-80, small and medium sized textile and garment firms with a total workforce of 26,000, of which 20 to 30 percent are foreigners.
Fashion labels, like
Abercrombie & Fitch
, Banana Republic,
Brooks Brothers
,
Marks & Spencer
,
Tommy Hilfiger
and
L.L. Bean
are all manufactured in a number of factories located both on the island and in Seberang Prai on the mainland.
Garments shipped to the world include jeans, T-shirts, men's shirts, knitted wear, skirts, blouses, tracksuits and jackets.
Apart from these items, clothing labels and buttons are also made for overseas market.
With no sweatshops traceable, most firms run )with Worldwide Responsible Apparel Production certified - operations.
