African Cotton & Textile Industry Alliance formed in Johannesburg

In a landmark agreement, top executives of Sub-Saharan Africa textile Industries have formed an African Cotton & Textile Industry Alliance. According to sources, this meeting was organized with the assistance of the Regional Agricultural Trade Expansion Support (RATES) programme, a Usaid-funded regional project.
The decision to form African cotton and textile industry body, was taken at the inaugural Regional Cotton & Textile Executive Summit held recently in Nairobi in April 2005.
"Underpinning the formation of the new body was the urgent need for regional integration and the well-recognized need for the region to collaborate in a cohesive manner, to act with a common voice and to interact on all issues that affect its competitiveness and ability to compete in the global market," the representative of alliance said.
The interim executive committee officials include; Mr. Jas Bedi (Kenya) as the chairman, other members of the committee includes: Igsaan Salie (South Africa), Kersley Ramdoss (Madagascar), Okelo Ocero (Uganda)and P. Rajeswaran (Botswana).Participants underscored the importance of a Pan African movement and unanimously agreed to co-opt other African countries.
The new organization would be represented at the forthcoming Corporate Council on Africa's US-Africa Business Summit in Baltimore, USA and at the Fourth AGOA Forum to be held in July in Dakar, Senegal. Fourteen countries in the COMESA Sub-region were represented.
