Apart from cotton T-shirts, US imports of cotton textiles and apparel grew in 2005 with 10.9 percent year-on-year growth.
US imports of cotton T-shirts touched the mark of 685.912 million square meters equivalents during January - July. This shows 0.6 percent year-on-year drop goes after 22 percent drop in imports of 2004.
Various changes in sourcing patterns are found despite the unaffected demand levels. While imports from Mexico, the top exporter, plunged 13.2 percent, El Salvador continued to be the second largest exporter.
Imports from Honduras, the third largest exporter, fell 25.3 percent. Imports from China rocketed to 50.372 million square metres, giving China the position as fourth largest exporter. Imports from the Dominican Republic went down 14.4 percent and imports from Guatemala rose 28.0 percent.
Duty free access influenced the imports of Peru, which registered an increase to 47.7 percent. Cotton apparel powerhouses of Bangladesh, Pakistan and India registered sharp increase to 39.8 percent, 38.1 percent and 201.0 percent respectively.
Imports from the smaller exporters like Cambodia, Nicaragua and Indonesia have increased.
