Ancient embroidery on the fag end

Trinh Bach, a renowned Vietnamese American artisan and researcher lamented over the decline of traditional art of needlework necessary to restore royal costumes, as very few craftsmen remain dedicated to the vocation.

Observing several traditional craft villages for the last ten years in Hanoi, Nam Dinh and Ha Tay in the north, Bach found only twenty-eight crafts people, aged 14-20, who were proficient in traditional style of embroidery.

Barring 17 craftsmen, the rest gathered in Ha Tay to continue the traditional career.

Bach was disappointed on finding the inability of most Vietnamese embroiderers to blend colors or select thread density to highlight artistic element; moreover their fundamentals on patterns of ancient attires were not clear.

He also noticed that their bent for commercial sewing for money has robbed them of patience and ability to be serious in this craft.
