More than two-thirds of the world sports goods industry, including sportswear, is in China.

According to a latest report entitled “The Development of China Sporting Goods Industry in 2010-11”, China accounts for over 65 percent of the world's sports items industry.

The report, however, adds that the country's large sports goods industry is in need of upgradation to increase efficiency.

During 2006-2011, the value of China's sports goods industry has kept on increasing year-on-year and is estimated to have reached 176 billion Yuan in 2011.

Next to the US, China is the world's second largest consumer of sports goods, including sportswear.

During the Eleventh Five Year Plan period, the number of outlets selling sports goods in China rose by about 10 percent year-on-year, whereas sales of sports goods grew by 20 percent year-on-year during the same period.

However, last year's figures released by various sports brands show a slowdown in Chinese sports goods industry, owing to increased costs and high inventory levels.

The report predicts that competition between various sports brands in the Chinese domestic market will further intensify in future.
