61% cotton seed available in Pakistan for kharif season

Pakistan has 24,501 tonnes of cotton seed available for sowing during the upcoming kharif season (2016-17), which is about 61 per cent of the country's total seed requirements, according to an agency report citing official figures.

In Punjab, a quantity of 20,537 tonnes of quality seed is available which is 66 per cent of total seed requirement in the province.

In Sind, the figure is around 3950 tonnes, enough to meet 48 per cent demand for the seed in the province.

Similarly, the 15 tonnes of cotton seed will be available in Khyber Pakhtunkha which is 29 per cent of the requirements of the province, the official data revealed.

The seed data availability may vary because the seed testing figures are still in progress.

During the fiscal year 2015-16, total seed availability was 34,520 tonnes which was 86 per cent of the total requirements of the country. (SH)
