Bangladesh’s commerce ministry has reimposed the provision of fumigating cotton imported from the United States and the Western Hemisphere at its ports. The move is expected to raise the lead time and cost of production for importers and hit export competitiveness.

However, joint secretary in the commerce ministry Mirajul Islam Ukil could not explain the reason why exactly the rule has been reimposed within a gap of two months, according to a report in a Bangladesh newspaper.

The government had in February this year issued a notification relaxing the mandatory requirement of fumigating US cotton after showing sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) and boll weevil-free certificates of the US exporting authorities at domestic ports. This has been a pending demand by domestic importers and spinners to save time and money.

The United States is an important source of cotton for domestic millers, traders and importers.
