The 74th plenary meeting is being organised by the Office of the Textiles Commissioner, Mumbai along with Cotton Corporation of India, Cotton Association of India and the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry, under the theme “From Farm to Fabric: The Many Faces of Cotton”.

Plenary meetings of the ICAC provide a forum for discussion of international issues of importance to the world cotton industry, and provide opportunities for industry and government leaders to consult on matters of mutual concern.

The theme “From Farm to Fabric: The Many Faces of Cotton” encompasses a broad range of topics, including mechanised picking, retailers' views on cotton, international exchange of germplasm, sustainable production practices and use of cotton by-products.

“The ICAC meeting is of special significance for India in view of the role played by the textiles sector in the Indian economy,” textiles commissioner Kavita Gupta told media persons in Mumbai while briefing about the event.

“Indian Textile industry provides direct employment to 45 million people and contributes 4 per cent to the GDP and accounts for 12 per cent of industrial production. A key 'Make in India' sector, the textile industry exports totalled $38 billion in 2014-15,” Gupta added, according to an official release.

India has 11.76 million hectares of area under cotton cultivation, the largest in the world. In other words, India accounts for 38 per cent of the world area under cotton production.

India is also the world's largest cotton producer with 6.21 million metric tons of crop, followed by China with 5.41 million tons, the US with 3.17 million tons and Pakistan 2.05 million tons. (RKS)
