Malawai’s National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) recently claimed genetically-modified Bt cotton has improved farmers’ yield by 100 per cent. NCST chief research services officer Lyson Kampira said since the introduction of the cotton variety, the yield increased to 800 kg per hectare from 400 kg per hectare—a substantial improvement.Kampira said NCST and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) have an open forum for agriculture biotechnology whose aim is to put in place measures to ensure a platform where scientists and journalists can discuss important information about technology, according to media reports from the country.
Kampira said this at a media workshop late last month.
