The National Cotton Council (NCC) has appreciated the strong, ongoing efforts of the United States government's decision to pursue a challenge against agricultural subsidies for farming crops, or particularly for cotton crops given by various countries to their cotton farmers, which are against the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

“So, this challenge reflects a growing desire in the United States and abroad to address more effectively the range of policies in major developing countries that affect agricultural markets,” he said. “More transparency is needed from major cotton producing countries like India, China and Pakistan, as they have failed to meet their obligations of timely notifications to the WTO.”
Through the dedicated discussions established by the WTO, cotton is the only agricultural commodity with an explicit mechanism that allows for the multilateral evaluation of domestic support, export subsidies and market access. (AR)
