Cotton sowing in the cotton bowl of India, Gujarat is down by a massive 66.89 percent from the same time last year, mainly due to a delay in arrivals of rain.

Cotton has been cultivated on just 576,000 hectares till now, against 1.74 million hectares in the same period last year in the state.

In the previous cotton season, cotton had been sown on around 2.6 million hectares.

However it is expected that sowing operations would gain speed, once the rains hit the state, which is expected any time soon, according to the metrological department.

Cotton sowing is mainly done from June through July.

Gujarat tops the country in cotton production, followed by Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
