Syrian govt calls cotton a strategic crop

The Syrian government has underlined and stressed upon the strategic importance of the cotton crop in the country.

While speaking at the annual cotton festival, the Minister of Agriculture said the government gave great importance to development of cotton farming in the country.

He said that the government would continue its efforts to foster the growth of cotton by supporting research and promoting modern technologies in irrigation.

Syrian cotton acreage has reached about 175,147 hectares this season, up 2,733 hectares from the last season. Cotton output is anticipated to touch 714,000 tons.

Several cotton scientists and farmers were honoured at the cotton festival.
