Chinese cotton imports nosedive in Jan

China's cotton imports declined significantly in January 2012 and average price continued to fall.

China imported 326,500 tons of cotton in January 2012, down 463,900 tons from the previous month, or a massive 58.7 percent.

It also represented a decrease of 64,000 tons from the same time last year, or a drop of 16.6 percent, according to customs statistics.

Average import price stood at US $2,401 / ton, down US $75 or 3 percent from December, representing a decrease of 15.3 percent year on year.

Between September 2011 and January 2012, China imported 2 million tons of cotton, an increase of 724,000 tons over the same period last year, or 56.7 percent year on year.
