Cotton sowing in India has been delayed this season due to late arrival of rains.

Cotton sowing in the country at the beginning of the kharif season 2012-13 has been completed in 1.3 million hectares of land, which is 200,000 hectares less than the 1.5 million hectares on which cotton was sowed by this time last year.

Cotton sowing is slow in major cotton growing states of Gujarat and Maharashtra, as well as in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, due to delayed rains. In these states, the total cotton sowing so far is 449,000 hectares less than last year.

However, cotton sowing is complete in Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan. But, the sowing has decreased this year by 60,000 hectares in Punjab, 59,000 hectares in Haryana and 54,000 hectares in Rajasthan.

For the new cotton season, the Indian Government has set target production per unit area as 550 kg/hectare through focus on high density planting.
