Ginners in Zambia have been advised to not to procure seed cotton from farmers until the entire process of negotiation gets completed and the stakeholders arrive at a fair procurement price.

Farmers in Petauke district protested against selling of cotton at a price that has not yet been agreed upon and burnt their cotton, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Permanent Secretary, Dr. David Shamulenge, said

Dr. Shamulenge advised the ginners to not to procure cotton from farmers till the Government arrives at a fair price. He added that they have learnt from their officers in the field that ginners are trying to persuade farmers to sell their produce at price not yet agreed upon.

He asked the Zambia Cotton Ginners' Association (ZCGA) to value the wish of the farmers and said that any efforts to persuade farmers to sell their produce now may result in failure of the negotiations related to price.

In spite of several rounds of meetings between representatives of the Zambia National Farmers' Union (ZNFU) and the ZCGA, they have failed to finalize the price of cotton.

Dr. Shamulenge requested the farmers and ginners to maintain their calm till the Government fixes a price that is mutually beneficial and acceptable, and added that such price would work as a motivation for both the parties and encourage them to continue contributing to the sector’s development.

Dr. Shamulenge said the Government is steadfast to safeguard the farmers and ensure empowerment of cotton farmers in the country.
