Activists from US non-governmental organizations (NGOs) made a plea to fashion designers to join the ‘As You Sow’ campaign and boycott the use of cotton from Uzbekistan, on the opening day of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York.

They said more than 75 global apparel brands including Adidas, Levi Strauss, YSL, Wal-mart and Gucci have stopped using Uzbek cotton in their textile and apparel products, owing to employment of children for plucking cotton in Uzbek cotton farms.

The issue of child labour and violation of their human rights was brought to limelight by the US media during last year’s Fashion Week in New York.

The global brands that have stopped using Uzbek cotton say they will continue to boycott Uzbek cotton until the International Labour Organisation makes an announcement that the Central Asian country has stopped deploying child labour in cotton fields.
