Guntur farmers are determined to raise cotton as they are comfortable to grow commercial crops for years disregarding of whether their produce is supported by the market according to the price they want to charge.
Another reason for these farmers to keep their positions with cotton in future is the guaranteed crop the Bt cotton has brought to them of late.
Due to Bt cotton, cotton growers in this region are confident of yield, though not on the prices.
Last year and this year, the kappas (cotton) prices have stood at the low of Rs1,850-1,900 a quintal in comparison to the 2003-04 season's price of Rs2,400.
However, the higher crop achieved by farmers has relieved them, said Mekala Lakshminarayana, a cotton farmer from Guntur and President of the local farmers' association.
