The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) would investigate the issue related to developing Bt cotton from a gene patented by a US firm, raised by the Sopory panel, S Ayappan, director general of ICAR has said.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of a function organized as a part of the centenary celebrations of Sugarcane Breeding Institute in Coimbatore, Mr. Ayappan said the ICAR would look into the issue raised by the Sopory panel report.

Recently, a committee led by SK Sopory, vice chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, released a report which blamed ICAR scientists for developing Bt cotton from Monsanto patented gene. The report says ICAR scientists presented the Bt cotton variety as India’s indigenous cotton variety.
