China has become a major importer of cotton from Uzbekistan, owing in part to a series of measures taken by the Government to encourage textile enterprises to import Uzbek cotton.

In 2012, the Working Groups of China and Uzbekistan held three meetings, which served as a communication platform for government departments and cotton enterprises of both nations.

From January to September 2012, China imported 254,000 tons of cotton worth US$ 612 million, up 44.3 percent year-on-year, according to Chinese customs statistics.

Cotton imports accounted for 85.5 percent of total Chinese imports from Uzbekistan during the nine-month period.
