Around 17 million bales of cotton have arrived in the Indian market as on January 31, 2013, with Gujarat contributing a major share.

So far, 17 million cotton bales have reached markets, of which 3.625 million bales have arrived in North Zone, 4.25 million bales in Gujarat, 3.95 million bales in Andhra Pradesh and 3.2 million bales in Maharashtra, according to a well-known cotton trader.

The Cotton Advisory Board has estimated India’s cotton production at 33.6 million bales for the current marketing season 2012-13.

India has an opening stock of 2.85 million bales, and another 0.8 million bales are likely to be imported, which makes the total availability of cotton in the country during the current season at 37.2 million bales, according to CAB estimates.

The textile mills in India are expected to consume about 26 million bales of cotton and another 7.5 million bales are likely to be exported during the ongoing season that ends on September 30, 2013, leaving an ending stock of 3.75 million bales, which would be more than the last season’s stock of 2.85 million bales.

As on January 31, 2013, registration for cotton exports stands at about four million bales, of which 3.4 million bales have already been exported.
