Chinese domestic & imported cotton price gap may narrow

The difference in price of domestic and imported cotton in China widened during 2012 to about 6,000 yuan/ton.

However, the price gap would narrow down in 2013, according to Mr. Gao Yong, vice president of China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC).

The huge difference in prices of domestic and international cotton was a significant factor that affected the Chinese textile and apparel industry last year.

In 2012, China’s textile and garment exports registered US$ 262.56 billion, showing a year-on-year growth of 3.3 percent, the lowest since 2010.

The CNTAC official attributed the sharp fall in global cotton prices to a drop in demand in end markets both at home and abroad.

As a result, domestic consumption of cotton in China remained at about 7.5 million tons last year, compared to peak consumption of about 10 million tons during earlier years.

This was due to some Chinese enterprises gradually shifting to use of synthetic fibres, which had same price in both domestic and international markets.

It is estimated that about two million tons of cotton market share in China shifted to chemical fibres in 2012.
