Spain's textile sector trade showed a downward trend in 2005.

Cotton yarn sector too registered a decline as number of operational spindles was reduced contributing to a sharp drop in cotton fabric production.

This resulted into a slide in cotton yarn imports, which plunged 12 percent to 43,824 tons from various countries in 2005.

Cotton yarn import from Turkey fell below 25.2 percent, Greece import fell below 23.7 percent, Germany import fell 62.7 percent and Pakistan import fell 32.5 percent.

India was the largest supplier of cotton yarn with imports from there reaching 74.6 percent to 9,244 tons.

But cotton yarn exports registered a decline of just 3 percent with export of 40,493 tons in 2005.

Export to Germany, the top market for Spain, recorded a fall of 16.1 percent to only 9,934 tons.

Fall in exports was compensated by increase in the same recorded for Lithuania and Poland.
