The quality of cotton imported by China declined in 2012, says a report released by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).

As per the report, the Chinese authorities inspected 5.28 million tons of imported cotton last year, more than double the quantity inspected in 2011.

Of the imported cotton inspected, 13.28 percent failed grade tests, while 2.71 percent did not meet the standard for fibre strength, showing a decline in quality compared to the previous year.

The entry-exit inspection bureau claimed US$ 201 million in compensation for sub-standard cotton supplied by overseas companies, AQSIQ said.

China imported cotton from 55 countries and regions in 2012. In terms of value, the US, India, Australia, Brazil and Uzbekistan were the top five suppliers of cotton to China during the year.

China’s cotton imports during the first five months of the current year declined by 17 percent year-on-year to 2.141 million tons.

During the first nine months of the current cotton season 2012/13, China imported 3.513 million tons of cotton, showing a decline of 17.4 percent year-on-year.
