Cotton trade expands

Cotton consumption during early part of 2006 grew as the fabric production increased significantly.

Cotton fabric output recorded a six percent year-on year rise in January to reach13.205 million square meters, highest monthly level since October 2005.

This boosted the domestic apparel industry as well that climbed 64.6 percent.

Total textile and apparel production also soared 5.5 percent in January.

As for textile, apparel and footwear exports, a 5.1 percent rise was registered to touch 895.7 million ringgit in the same month.

Major export destinations were the US, the EU, Singapore and Turkey, with exports to the US rising 20.3 percent in January.
