Cotton farming has yet not been given the status of staple industry in the country, though big businessmen consider that high-yielding varieties of cotton could fetch great deal of revenue and make Bangladesh the world's most competitive readymade garment producer.
Despite the fact that cotton is basic raw material for textile and RMG, country produces only one lakh cotton bales a year against the consumption of more than 20 lakh bales a year, according to Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA).
Even after this, government has not provided any facility of research and subsidy to increase cotton production.
Moreover, government has failed to launch high-yielding varieties, which resulted into the marginalisation of cotton production, informed the officials of Cotton Development Board (CDB).
