Paraguay's SENAVE cautions against use of old cotton seeds

The National Quality and Plant Health and Seeds (SENAVE) of Paraguay has expressed concern over the use of about 30,000 bags of cotton seeds from the past harvest for the next season.

According to a statement issued by SENAVE, the agency is concerned about the outcome and has urged that using the remaining bags of seeds is not advisable.

The agency is of the opinion that conservation of cotton seeds in appropriate conditions can maintain quality seed germination, but once it is exposed to normal ambient conditions or adverse situations, the quality could be seriously compromised, especially when the field environments are not favorable.

This may affect the rapid development of the cotton plants, causing inadequate seedling density loss after germination, i.e. germination may occur, but plants may lack enough strength and stamina to sustain growth.

SENAVE suggests seeking authorization before using the old seeds from last season’s harvest.

The agency urged all stakeholders of the cotton production system to analyze and balance the various factors that could affect the success of planting the seeds, especially in the management of the variables that could affect the seeds until they reach the hands of small cotton producer.

In June this year, Paraguay commercially released transgenic cotton Bollgard tolerant – Round up Ready (Bt-RR) seeds for cultivation.
