Inter specific cotton hybrid – Varalaxmi & DCH-32 released

World's first inter specific cotton hybrid called Varalaxmi and DCH-32 have brought laurels for the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Dharwad.

Dr R R Hanchinal, Director of Research, UAS Dharwad, announced this while addressing a 3-day annual group meeting of the All India Co-ordinated Cotton Improvement Project on Saturday, informed.

This hybrid will revolutionise the cotton industry of the country opined Dr Hanchinal.

UAS Dharwad, has been a pioneer at encouraging scientific temper among the community and today has 374 revolving funds with seed money of Rs2 crore providing net earning to the tune of Rs7 crore.

Due to this, UAS Dharwad set up several collaborative research projects with national, international universities and private seed companies and achieved leading status having maximum research projects in the country.

International Universities and institutions Cornell University of Life Sciences, New York, McGill University, Canada, Texas A and M, Institute of Agriculture, Bogur, Indonesia, Bogasari Four Mills, Indonesia and Government of Indonesia are some examples of collaborative efforts carried out by UAS.

One of the original and path breaking research was conducted by UAS Dharwad in the development of coloured cotton varieties and for this a different plant protection module was also conceived.
