Farmers of the Ramechhap region are about to give up cotton farming as they are unable to find any buyers.
Earlier, cotton demand was very high when it was used for making cloth of khandi, a traditional attire, but today, such cloth is out of vogue and not preferred even as local producers are discouraged.
Barter system plays a major role as farmers purchase cereals for cotton.
One farmer informed that it was time when people used to come home to buy cotton but now the situation has reversed. They have to travel around to seek potential buyer.
Further, lack of cotton market has forced the farmers to switch over to other alternatives income sources.
