Cotton fabric exports struggle to keep up with China

Cotton fabric exports in 2005 recorded almost 23.1 percent rise to reach 2.967 billion square metres mark.
Pakistan is the second largest exporter of cotton fabric in the world following China.
However, statistics reveal that exports during the first quarter of 2006 have slowed down.
In January, exports dropped 14.2 percent to 182.2 million square metres and touched 211.3 million square metres in March, representing a 4.9 percent year-on-year decline.
Cumulative January through March 2006 cotton fabric exports are pegged at 575.7 million square metres, which is around 7.1 percent lower than that recorded in the same period in 2005.
Experts believe that rapidly increasing competitive pressures, especially from China, is the major reason for this downtrend.
China's cotton fabric exports in March reached a record 520 million square meters.
