For the past ten months, the cotton spinning and weaving industry has been struggling to upgrade its output as the demand from the downstream manufacturers is steadily falling.

Statistics reveal that the production in February touched 63.5 from 65.0 in January on Index and representing almost 17 percent year-on-year drop.

Growing imports from India and Pakistan is also adversely affecting the domestic sector.

In January cotton yarn imports rose 6.7 percent to 11,331 tons, that substitutes the use of nearly 55,000 bales of local produce.

Cotton woven fabric production also fell 11.9 percent this February as compared to 2005.
