At a meeting attended by Minister of Agriculture Jorge Gattini and Cadelpa representatives, including the association’s president José Vargas Peña, it was decided to boost the country’s cotton production to 100,000 kilos.

The work will be undertaken in two stages, and would aim at increasing the area under cotton to 50,000 hectares.

Paraguay recorded cotton output of 15,000 kilos in the first six months, which is the lowest in the last 50 years. This quantity would only suffice for domestic mill consumption, and there would not be anything left for exports.

Vargas Peña said the MAG and Cadelpa would work together to raise productivity and on improving the production system. The next meeting, which will be held at the technical level, would decide further on this matter, he added.

He said that there is no concrete data or exact figures to find out the current yield per hectare, but Cadelpa estimates that to reach production target of 100,000 kilos, the yield should be at least 2,000 kilos per hectare.

For this, native seed production needs to be increased, while adopting new production systems, including improved variety of seeds and improved mechanization systems, he said.

Meanwhile, MAG has announced that it will make available US$ 1.2 million resources from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) under the ‘South-South’ program to revive cotton production.
