Cotton imports represented a year-on-year surge of 188.4 percent reaching 2.13 million bales with each bale equal to 480-pounds, in the month of May, this year.
However, this figure registered a slight drop from that imported in April this year.
Total cotton imported during the January-May 2006 period touched 9.5 million bales or 2.07 million tons.
China has allocated 2.5 million tons in cotton import quotas for 2006.
January-May imports have reached 2.07 million tons or 79.8 percent of the issued quotas, suggesting additional quotas have been allocated for the imports of an additional 0.4 million tons or 2.1 million 480-pound bales.
